The curation is thoughtful: "5AM (Gamecube)" opens the day with that achingly beautiful early-morning melody that original AC fans know by heart, while pulling "8AM" from the DS version and "12PM" from the 3DS version ensures each hour gets its definitive rendition.
The arrangements breathe new life into music that was already beloved. Hearing these lo-fi, sample-based originals expanded into fuller arrangements reveals just how strong the underlying compositions always were. The late-night selections are particularly inspired -- "11PM (Wii)" and the Gamecube's haunting "3AM" hit different when given extra production polish.
The decision to weave between console generations throughout the day creates a meta-narrative of the series' musical evolution, from the Gamecube's jazzy warmth to New Leaf's more polished pop sensibility. The K.K. Slider section is a highlight reel of the dog musician's greatest hits.
"K.K. Blues," "K.K. Gumbo," and "K.K. Rock" cover his genre-hopping range, while "Two Days Ago" and "Forest Life" are deep cuts that serious fans will appreciate. "Go K.K. Rider" brings the energy, "DJ K.K." adds a modern spin, and the album wisely closes with "Rainy Day" -- because no Animal Crossing musical journey is complete without that melancholy drizzle.
This is a love letter to the series' music that any AC fan will treasure.
