Arcania: Gothic 4 Soundtrack

2010 · Playstation 3, Windows, Xbox 360

Whatever you think about Arcania's departure from the hardcore Gothic formula, the orchestral score holds its own. "Arrival in Feshyr" eases you into the island setting before "The Hills of Stewark" opens up the world. The location themes do solid work -- "Silverlake Theme" shimmers appropriately, "The Swamplands" drags and lurks, and "Thorniara Theme" carries coastal grandeur.

"Xardas Tower" is a standout, channeling the dark mystique of the series' iconic necromancer with gravity that connects back to the earlier Gothic games. "War Drums" delivers exactly what the name promises for combat encounters, while "Echoes of Eternity" and "The Paths of the Ancients" handle the more contemplative dungeon exploration.

"The Tavern" provides that essential RPG tavern warmth. The "Credit Song" wraps things with a sense of closure that the main Gothic storyline arguably needed more of.
