ARMORED CORE LAST RAVEN OST

2005 · Playstation 2

Last Raven was the final PS2-era Armored Core and arguably the most punishing entry in the entire franchise, and Kota Hoshino's soundtrack matches that intensity beat for beat. Opening with "Fact" -- a track that hits like a declaration of war -- the OST immediately establishes its no-nonsense attitude.

The enigmatically titled tracks are classic Hoshino, with names like "C.K.Modify," "Pill Words," and "Hype.Charles" that feel like intercepted transmissions from a world that's already moved past caring about human communication.

"Blockhead Elegy" and "Pride of Lions" stand out as mission tracks that perfectly capture the game's oppressive atmosphere, where every sortie could be your last and the Raven population is dwindling by the hour. "Works, Clocks, Signals" has an industrial mechanical pulse that sounds like the inside of an AC hangar, while "Visions" and "Pause Mind" offer rare moments of contemplation.

The VR Arena tracks -- "Last Arena" and "VR Zone" -- carry a colder, more synthetic edge befitting those simulation battles. The closing stretch of the album is where the weight of the narrative really lands. "Cocoon" and "The Nest" build tension toward the endgame, and "Last Raven's End" delivers a conclusion that feels appropriately final for the last game in this generation of Armored Core.

The inclusion of both "Inside, Outside" and "Inside,Outside" (with and without the space) as separate entries is a small curiosity, but it's fitting for a series that has always played fast and loose with punctuation in its track listings.
