2000 · Gamecube, Playstation, Playstation 2

Army Men: Air Attack 2 was part of 3DO's relentless flood of plastic soldier games around the turn of the millennium, and its soundtrack delivers exactly what you'd expect from a helicopter combat game set in backyards and kitchens.

The 15 untitled tracks lean into militaristic action themes with a slightly campy edge, matching the absurdity of green and tan toy soldiers waging war across household environments. It's functional combat music that keeps the adrenaline flowing as you strafe enemy positions from your little plastic chopper.

The score does a surprisingly decent job of differentiating between mission environments, shifting tone as you move from outdoor garden battles to indoor kitchen skirmishes. Some tracks carry a heavier, more urgent feel suited to the game's tougher later missions, while others adopt a lighter, almost playful military march quality that acknowledges the inherent silliness of the premise.

The instrumentation is modest but effective for the PS1/PS2 era. Without official track titles, this is admittedly a tough soundtrack to discuss in detail, and it's unlikely to end up on anyone's all-time favorites list.

But within the context of the Army Men franchise -- a series not exactly known for its production values -- Air Attack 2's music does its job competently. It's the kind of score that worked best in the moment, providing a backdrop for the simple pleasure of melting tan soldiers with napalm strikes from a toy helicopter.
