Army Men: Air Attack

1999 · Gameboy, Nintendo 64, Playstation, Windows

The original Army Men: Air Attack arrived in 1999 as one of the more enjoyable entries in 3DO's sprawling plastic soldier empire, and its soundtrack -- while modest -- gets the job done for a game about piloting toy helicopters through suburban war zones.

With just nine tracks covering the title screen, seven missions, and credits, this is about as lean as a game soundtrack gets. The music leans into a Saturday morning cartoon military vibe, appropriate for a game that never took itself too seriously.

Each mission track adapts to its environment, shifting mood as players move from backyard battlegrounds to bathroom skirmishes and beyond. The compositions carry that late-90s console action game energy -- urgent enough to keep you engaged during bombing runs, but not so intense that it clashes with the fundamentally goofy premise of green army men fighting tan army men next to garden hoses and sandboxes.

The Title theme establishes the military framework, while the Credits music winds things down after you've melted your last enemy. This isn't a soundtrack that's going to change anyone's life, but it has a nostalgic charm for anyone who grew up renting PS1 games on a Friday night.

Air Attack was one of those titles that thrived on pure concept -- toy helicopters are cool, melting plastic soldiers is fun -- and the music understood its assignment. It supported the experience without overreaching, which is honestly more than could be said for a lot of the Army Men franchise's output during 3DO's scattershot late-90s publishing spree.
