Assassin's Creed II The Original Game Soundtrack

2015 · Playstation 3, Windows, Xbox 360

This 2015 release of the Assassin's Creed II soundtrack brings Jesper Kyd's masterwork to a wider audience, and it holds up beautifully. From the moment "Earth" sets the stage with its ethereal, almost cosmic tone, you know you're in for something special.

"Venice Rooftops" remains one of the greatest pieces of parkour music ever composed, its driving rhythm perfectly synchronized to the feeling of leaping across terracotta tiles above the Grand Canal. And "Ezio's Family" -- well, there's a reason Ubisoft has brought that melody back in nearly every Assassin's Creed game since.

"Florence Tarantella" and "Home In Florence" establish a warm, lived-in feeling for the city where young Ezio grows up before tragedy reshapes his life. The shift in tone when the tracklist moves to "Venice Flight" and "Florence Escape" is palpable, the music picking up tension and pace as the conspiracy deepens.

"Night Mission In Venice" is a standout stealth track, all creeping strings and subtle percussion that makes you instinctively lower your profile. "Venice Combat" and "Venice Combat Low" provide the dynamic combat system with equally dynamic scoring.

Kyd's genius lies in how he weaves together Renaissance-period influences with electronic and orchestral production without ever sounding anachronistic. "Sanctuary" evokes ancient mystery, "The Madam" drips with Venetian decadence, and "The Plague" paints a grim picture of the era's darkest chapter.

This soundtrack defined not just how Assassin's Creed would sound, but set a new standard for how open-world games could use music to build a sense of place.
