Assassin's Creed III: The Tyranny of King Washington - Music from the Video Game

2013 · Playstation 3, Nintendo Wii U, Windows, Xbox 360

Lorne Balfe went full alternate history horror with this one and it absolutely works. The Tyranny of King Washington DLC imagines George Washington corrupted by an Apple of Eden, and the score abandons the revolutionary optimism of the base game for something colder and more desperate.

That "Wall of Sound Remix" of the AC III main theme right at the top tells you immediately that everything familiar has been twisted. "The Tyrant" gives Washington a terrifying musical identity that is miles away from anything in the original game.

"Frozen" and "Winter's Grasp" capture the brutal cold of the Infamy episode with sparse, icy arrangements that make you feel the frontier closing in. "Ratonhnhake:ton" strips Connor's theme down to something more primal, reflecting his spirit animal powers and his desperation to stop a mad king.

"Solitude" is genuinely bleak in a way the main game never allowed itself to be. "Rooftop Chase" and "Dark Alleys" bring urban paranoia to the corrupted versions of Boston and New York. "Nightmares" lives up to its name with unsettling textures, and "The Redemption" earns its catharsis after thirty tracks of tension.

The three-episode DLC structure gave Balfe room to build a complete arc, and "Unwavering Resolve" near the end carries the weight of everything that came before it. One of the best DLC soundtracks in the franchise.
