"Leave Her Johnny" is genuinely moving, a farewell song that hits different after you have spent fifty hours with these characters. "Maid of Amsterdam" and "Whisky Johnny O'" bring the bawdy tavern energy, while "Fish in the Sea" keeps things light and rhythmic for long sailing stretches.
Ubisoft recorded these with actual vocal groups performing period-accurate arrangements, and the authenticity shows. "Dead Horse" has this mournful quality that sneaks up on you between the more boisterous numbers. The combination of Tyler's sweeping score and these rough-hewn crew vocals creates something no other game soundtrack has really replicated.
"Running Down to Cuba" (truncated in the tracklist here) closes things out with infectious energy. This 2013 release is the definitive version if you want the complete Black Flag musical experience in one package.
