Assassin's Creed Origins: The Curse of the Pharaohs Original Game Soundtrack

2018 · Playstation 4, Windows, Xbox One

Sarah Schachner's score for The Curse of the Pharaohs DLC is arguably her most creatively unrestrained work in the Assassin's Creed franchise. Track titles drawn directly from Egyptian funerary texts -- "Opening of the Mouth," "Book of Breathings," "Book of Going Forth by Day" -- aren't just thematic window dressing; the music genuinely channels the otherworldly gravitas of these ancient rituals.

"The Boy King" and "The Heretic King" are standout character pieces that musically distinguish Tutankhamun and Akhenaten with remarkable specificity. "Only Aten Is Divine" leans into the controversial monotheism of Akhenaten's Amarna period with an almost hymn-like quality, while "Lady of the Two Lands" brings regal authority befitting Nefertiti.

"The Battle of Kadesh" delivers the album's most intense combat writing, referencing one of ancient history's most famous military engagements with thunderous percussion and aggressive strings. The afterlife sequences are where this soundtrack truly transcends.

"The Field of Reeds" is hauntingly beautiful, capturing the Egyptian paradise with shimmering, almost dreamlike textures. "Hour One" and "Hour Eight" reference the twelve hours of the Duat that Ra's solar barque must traverse each night, and "Weighing of the Heart (Her Story)" takes one of Egyptian mythology's most iconic concepts and turns it into something deeply personal.

"Apep's Remains" brings serpentine menace to the chaos god's presence. This is a masterclass in how DLC music can surpass the base game.
