Assassin's Creed: The Best of Jesper Kyd

2016 · Playstation 3, Windows, Xbox 360

This is the essential Jesper Kyd collection, gathering his iconic compositions from Assassin's Creed through Revelations into one masterful compilation. "Ezio's Family" is here, of course -- arguably the single most recognizable piece of music in all of gaming, a melody so powerful that the franchise kept rearranging it for over a decade after Kyd wrote it for AC II.

But this collection proves just how deep Kyd's contributions went. "Home in Florence," "Florence Rooftops," and "Dreams of Venice" defined the sound of Renaissance Italy so completely that you can practically smell the canals and feel the terracotta under Ezio's boots.

"City of Rome" and "Echoes of the Roman Ruins" from Brotherhood show Kyd evolving his palette to capture a grander, more imperial setting, while "Welcome to Kostantiniyye" and "The Crossroads of the World" from Revelations brought Ottoman Constantinople to life with Middle Eastern instruments and a cosmopolitan energy.

"Leonardo's Inventions (Extended)" is a delightful curiosity piece, and "Florence Tarantella" captures the street-level energy of Italian daily life. Even the original game gets its due with "Masyaf Village" and "Jerusalem Hanging."

What makes this compilation so valuable is hearing the arc of Kyd's work across four games in one sitting. You can trace how his approach evolved from the austere, ambient tension of the first Assassin's Creed to the lush romanticism of the Ezio trilogy.

"Under Vatican City," "The Brotherhood Escapes," and "End Fight" demonstrate his gift for action scoring, while "Sanctuary" and "Earth" showcase his more experimental, electronic side. This is a monument to the composer who gave Assassin's Creed its musical soul.
