Assassin's Creed Valhalla: Blood, Fire, Tears (Dawn of Ragnarök Original Game Soundtrack)

2022 · Playstation 4, Playstation 5, Stadia, Windows

This three-track release from the Dawn of Ragnarok expansion distills the mythological DLC's emotional core down to its most devastating moments. With Jesper Kyd returning alongside contributions from the broader Valhalla music team, these pieces center on the Norse myth of Baldr's death -- the event that sets Ragnarok itself into motion.

"Frigg Wept" is a stunning piece of grief, channeling the All-Mother's sorrow through vocal lament and orchestral despair that ranks among the most emotionally raw music in the entire franchise. "Grieving Baldr" extends that mourning with a more contemplative approach, layering Nordic folk instrumentation over somber strings in a way that feels like a proper funeral rite.

There's a ritualistic quality to the composition that connects it to Valhalla's broader themes of death and the afterlife, but the intimacy here -- a parent mourning a child -- gives it a universality that transcends the mythological setting.

It's Kyd working in the tradition of his finest Valhalla contributions. "Surtr" pivots dramatically into apocalyptic territory, evoking the fire giant whose flames will consume the world. The contrast is powerful -- from quiet grief to cosmic destruction in three tracks.

While this is obviously a small release, it functions almost like a tone poem, telling the story of how personal loss ignites world-ending rage. If you played Dawn of Ragnarok, these three pieces will instantly transport you back to Svartalfheim.

If you haven't, they stand as a compelling miniature tragedy on their own terms.
