Sons of the Great North is the expanded companion album to the main Valhalla soundtrack, and it's where Jesper Kyd's score really gets to breathe and stretch across the English countryside. "Out of the North" opens with the primal energy of the Viking invasion, while "The Bounteous Earth" captures the surprising beauty and fertility of the land they've come to claim. The mythological dimension of Valhalla gets rich treatment here, with "Bifrost," "Jotunheim," and "The Well of Wyrd" transporting listeners into the game's stunning Asgard and Jotunheim sequences.
"Visions on a Mountain Peak" is a gorgeous ambient piece that captures the awe of those otherworldly vistas, and "Animus Anomaly" provides a jarring modern-tech contrast that reminds you there's a sci-fi frame story lurking underneath all the longships.
"Holmgang" delivers the raw, ritualistic intensity of Viking honor duels. The character-driven tracks are where this album really shines beyond the base soundtrack. "Leofirth's Honor," "Fulke's Destiny," and "Cordelia's Vengeance" each tell compact emotional stories tied to specific narrative arcs, while "Shadow-Walker" and "Silent Ambush" nail the stealth gameplay with tense, restrained scoring.
"Spirit of the Raven" beautifully evokes Synin soaring over the map, and the album's sheer scope reflects just how massive Valhalla's world truly is.
