The recurring "Theme From Assault Suit Leynos" that spans Stages 1, 3, 5, and 7 is a genuine earworm, its driving rhythm perfectly matching the frantic side-scrolling mech action the game is known for. Leynos 2 on the Saturn represents a massive leap in audio fidelity, and the soundtrack takes full advantage.
The mission-by-mission structure with tracks labeled from "Misson 3-1" through "Misson 7" reflects the game's branching path system, where player choices determined which missions came next and therefore which music you heard.
The Boss theme hits with satisfying intensity, and the Assault Suit Selection screen music carries a cool tactical tension that perfectly accompanies the pre-mission mech loadout customization that defined the series. The inclusion of an unused track from Leynos 2 is a nice archival touch, giving fans a glimpse at content that never made it into the final Saturn release.
"Run Caster," which scores Stages 2, 4, and 6 of the original Genesis game, is arguably the standout of the entire collection, its urgent bassline and soaring lead melody capturing that specific late-80s/early-90s Sega energy that is impossible to fake.
This 2024 release finally gives these underseen mech-action gems the dedicated soundtrack treatment they deserved decades ago.
