ASTEBREED ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK

2013 · Windows

Astebreed is one of those indie mecha shoot-em-ups that punches way above its weight class, and the soundtrack by Edelweiss completely sells the illusion of a triple-A production. "Tear the Filunes" rips open with urgent orchestral rock that never lets up, "Headwinds" drives forward with this relentless momentum that matches the game's breakneck pacing, and "Est" shifts gears into something genuinely haunting mid-campaign, like a funeral in the middle of a war.

The emotional range here is surprising for a shmup. "Not Alone" and "The Same Origin" carry real narrative weight, pulling from the game's story about inherited mecha and interstellar conflict between the Filune aliens and humanity.

Then "Armageddon" arrives and just levels everything with full orchestral fury. The quieter bookends matter too. "Familia" and "Life Goes On" wind things down with warmth, and "Shade of Stardust" closes with this bittersweet shimmer that sticks with you.

"Beyond the Canyon" feels like exhaling after holding your breath for an entire playthrough. If you think shmup soundtracks are just noise, Astebreed exists to prove you wrong.
