Astebros

2023 · Genesis / Mega Drive, Windows

Astebros is a genuine Mega Drive game released in 2023, and its soundtrack is the real deal -- composed within the constraints of the Yamaha YM2612 sound chip that gave the Genesis its distinctive crunchy, punchy character.

The variety here is impressive: "Inside Giant" and "Flying Castle" suggest wildly different environments rendered through the same six FM synthesis channels, while "Forge" hammers away with the industrial grit that the Genesis hardware does so naturally.

"Boss" and "Final Boss" bring the requisite intensity, pushing the sound chip to deliver urgent, driving melodies. The world-building through music is charming and imaginative. "Pigmen Fort" and "Haunted Mansion" paint their locations with economy and personality, "Circus" presumably goes for that off-kilter carnival energy, and "Black Market" evokes the shady dealings of a fantasy underground economy.

"Pub" and "Camp" handle the quieter social spaces where adventurers rest between dungeon runs, while "Bard Song" is a lovely inclusion -- every good fantasy game needs a bard moment. "Fairy" and "Devil" sit at opposite moral poles with presumably matching tonal contrasts.

The functional tracks round things out perfectly: "Character Select" gets you pumped to choose your hero, "Orb Get" and "Treasure" deliver those satisfying collection jingles, and "Game Over" presumably stings just enough to make you hit continue.

Even "SFX Bell" earns its place on the tracklist. For a game released decades after the Genesis's commercial peak, Astebros and its soundtrack prove that the homebrew scene isn't just about nostalgia -- it's about artists who genuinely love these hardware limitations as a creative medium.
