PlatinumGames brought their A-game to this one, and the sound selection from Astral Chain captures exactly why this Switch-exclusive action game hit so hard in 2019. The combat phase tracks are where things get wild though. "Central City (Combat Phase)" layers electronic beats over orchestral stabs in a way that perfectly matches the dual-character fighting system. The Astral Plane tracks deserve special attention.
The exploration version drifts through alien atmospheres with unsettling beauty, then the combat phase kicks in and it's pure controlled chaos. The Homunculus boss themes escalate perfectly across alpha, beta, and gamma variants, each one meaner than the last.
And the Jena Anderson arc, from her character theme through "Rebellion and Salvation" into "Catastrophe," is some of the best villain scoring PlatinumGames has ever done. "Dark Hero" closing things out in both female and male versions is a great touch, tying the player character's identity to the music itself.
This is a sound selection rather than the full OST, so it's the highlights reel, but what a highlights reel. Satoshi Igarashi and the composing team understood that an action game about fighting interdimensional chimeras while tethered to a spectral partner needed music that was equally unhinged and gorgeous.
