Death's Gambit: Afterlife

2021 · Playstation 4, Switch, Windows

Death's Gambit: Afterlife expanded the original Souls-like sidescroller substantially, and the soundtrack grew to match. "Afterlife" sets the tone immediately with this brooding orchestral swell, and from there the score weaves between heavy boss battle intensity and surprisingly delicate quiet moments.

"Sky Tomb" has this grandiose, almost cathedral-like quality that matches those towering vertical environments. "Xyarlohatp" is the kind of final boss track that earns its unpronounceable eldritch name, throwing everything at you with driving percussion and layered strings.

"Battle for Vados" carries that desperate, backs-against-the-wall energy, while "The Eldritch Hand" leans into cosmic horror territory with unsettling harmonics. "A Murder of Crows" and "Labyrinth of Thorns" both nail the dark fantasy atmosphere without ever sounding generic.

The piano arrangements scattered throughout the tracklist are a highlight. "Forest Meadow Piano Arrange," "Gaian's Cradle Piano Arrange," and "Endless Piano Arrange" strip their source themes down to something fragile and reflective, giving you breathing room between the intensity.

"The Beginning of Hope" and "The Grey Wanderer" round out an album that captures the full emotional range of a game about death, purpose, and what comes after.
