DeathSpank Soundtrack

2010 · MacOS, Playstation 3, Windows, Xbox 360

Ron Gilbert's action-RPG parody got a soundtrack that's just as committed to the bit as the game itself. "I Am DeathSpank" is a heroic fanfare played completely straight despite the fact that you're controlling a purple-thonged dispenser of justice, and that tension between genuine musical craft and absurd context is what makes the whole thing work.

Seven tracks, and every one of them is doing something fun. "Evil Is A Four-Letter Word" captures that mock-serious adventuring tone perfectly, while "Boss Battle Rumble" goes surprisingly hard for a comedy game—real orchestral weight behind what amounts to fighting enchanted chickens and evil orphans.

"Madame Primp" shifts into something theatrical and sly, matching the game's eccentric NPC energy. "Sailing The Seas Of Justice" is exactly as bombastic as it sounds, all swelling brass and nautical adventure vibes. And "A Whole Lotta Justice Going On" closes things out with the kind of swaggering confidence that only DeathSpank could pull off.

It's a short soundtrack, but it matches the game's tone perfectly—genuinely well-composed music that never once winks at the camera, even while everything around it is completely ridiculous.
