Deep Ones

2017 · PS Vita, Playstation 4, Switch, Windows

Deep Ones wears its influences on its sleeve -- it's a retro platformer inspired by H.P. Lovecraft but filtered through a ZX Spectrum-era aesthetic, and the soundtrack matches that vibe with chiptune and synthwave that sounds like it crawled out of a 1980s Eastern European computer lab.

Track names like "cybercarribean siren" and "multi universe steamship" tell you exactly how weird and specific this game's world gets. The tracklist is massive for an indie platformer, clocking in at 36 tracks. "retrowave police" and "neon bastion" deliver the synthwave goods, while "hammer and sickle" nods to the game's distinctly Russian development sensibility.

"summer in black hole" is a standout -- somehow both melancholic and groovy at the same time. The pair of "drink'it up" and "drink'it down" shows a playful sense of humor in the sequencing. "Julia's spaceship" and "lonely planet" provide quieter, more atmospheric moments between the action-oriented tracks like "flamethrower" and "leather chase."

The whole collection has this lo-fi, slightly rough-around-the-edges quality that fits the chunky pixel art perfectly. "escape from bottom" and "catapulting" capture the frantic energy of the platforming itself, while "the loss" and "waiting" handle the emotional beats.
