Demon's Souls ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK

2020 · Playstation 5

Bluepoint's PS5 remake gave Demon's Souls the orchestral score it always deserved, and the results are staggering. The original 2009 game leaned heavily on silence and sparse ambient sound, but this reimagined soundtrack brings full orchestral and choral arrangements to every boss encounter.

"Maiden Astraea" is devastating -- a mournful, choir-driven piece that amplifies the guilt of fighting the game's most morally uncomfortable boss into something almost unbearable. "Flamelurker" is pure panic set to music, all frantic strings and thundering percussion that perfectly matches one of the Souls series' most notorious skill checks.

"Tower Knight" pairs bombastic brass with a sense of towering scale, and "Maneater" captures the dread of fighting two of those winged nightmares on a narrow bridge. "Storm King" goes in the opposite direction -- sweeping and almost beautiful, reflecting the strange majesty of that fight against a sky full of flying rays.

"Old King Allant" builds to a desperate, tragic crescendo befitting a king consumed by his own ambition, while "The Old One" drops into primordial, eldritch territory. "Return to Slumber" closes the album with a quiet finality that Souls fans know well -- that bittersweet feeling of an age ending.

"Maiden in Black" threads through the whole experience as an anchor of calm. This is one of the finest reimagined game soundtracks ever produced, proving that the right score can transform an already legendary game.
