The PC-FX was NEC's ill-fated successor to the PC Engine, and Der Langrisser FX is one of its more interesting artifacts -- a port of the SNES classic rebuilt for hardware that barely anyone owned. The soundtrack benefits from the PC-FX's CD-quality audio capabilities, giving these battle themes a richer, more layered sound than the SPC700 chip could manage on the Super Famicom.

Comparing this to the SNES version is half the fun. The enemy commander themes -- Leon, Bargas, Bernhardt -- all get upgraded arrangements that bring out details the original hardware compressed. "Dark Princess" gains an ethereal quality with better samples, and "Bosel" sounds genuinely threatening with the expanded audio palette.
The ally battle themes (all seven of them) benefit similarly, with fuller orchestration that makes the tactical battles feel more cinematic. The PC-FX version also adds some location-specific tracks that flesh out the world -- "Inside the Cave," "Beach BGM," and "Night BGM" give non-combat moments their own atmosphere.
Character themes like "Jessica," "Lushiris," and "Riana" get more room to breathe. The "Staff Roll" is a satisfying capstone. This is essentially the definitive audio version of Der Langrisser, trapped on a console almost nobody played.
