Desktop Dungeons Original Soundtrack

2013 · Windows

Desktop Dungeons was a puzzle-roguelike that hid fiendish depth beneath a cute tile-based exterior, and its soundtrack matches that energy perfectly -- playful track names masking genuinely good compositions. Just look at these titles: "Whaaarrgarrrbl," "Troll in a Minor," "The Dragon With the Girl Tattoo."

The pun game alone deserves an award. But beneath the comedy, composer Danny Baranowsky (and the QCF Design team) built a score with real range. "A Kingdom's Lament" carries genuine weight for a game about clicking on tiles, and "Dunes of Damnation" brings desert atmosphere that makes you forget you're playing something that started as a browser game.

"Reptilian Rhapsody" goes appropriately bombastic, while "Desktop Destiny" sets the tone with a theme that says "yes, this tiny dungeon matters." "The Namtar Giveth" and "The Namtar Taketh Away" are a clever paired set that mirrors the game's risk-reward design philosophy.

"Oasis Denied" stings as much musically as it does when the game actually denies you that healing tile. And "Desktop Done" wraps things up with a sense of accomplishment that feels earned after the punishment this game dishes out.
