Diablo 2 Lord of Destruction

2001 · MacOS, Windows

The Lord of Destruction expansion brought players to the frozen slopes of Mount Arreat, and Matt Uelmen's five-track score for Act V is some of his finest work in the Diablo series. Though compact, every track here is dense with atmosphere.

"Fortress" sets the mood for Harrogath, the last bastion of the Barbarian homeland, with a weary but defiant tone that captures a civilization making its final stand against the forces of Hell. "Ancients" is the crown jewel of this expansion's music, accompanying the legendary trial atop Arreat Summit where players face the three guardian spirits.

The composition carries a sense of sacred reverence mixed with mortal danger that perfectly matches one of the game's most memorable encounters. "Halls" provides the unsettling ambiance for the Nihlathak's Temple and the Halls of the Dead, blending dread with the corruption seeping through the Barbarian stronghold.

"Siege" delivers the chaotic energy of the Worldstone Keep's final approach, where wave after wave of Hell's armies stand between you and Baal. "Ice" rounds out the collection with the biting cold of Arreat's frozen exterior areas, its sparse and howling composition making you feel the wind cutting through your armor.

Five tracks is all Uelmen needed to create one of the most atmospheric acts in the entire Diablo saga.
