Dishonored Original Game Soundtrack

2013 · Playstation 3, Windows, Xbox 360

Twelve tracks of industrial dread and whale-oil menace. Daniel Licht's score for the original Dishonored is a masterclass in restraint, building Dunwall's oppressive atmosphere through texture rather than melody. The "Main Theme" creeps in like fog off the river, all low strings and ticking percussion, while "Empress Death" hits with the kind of gut-punch gravity that sets the entire revenge plot in motion.

"The Drunken Whaler" deserves its own paragraph because it genuinely became iconic. That children's-choir reimagining of "Drunken Sailor" is one of the most effectively unsettling pieces of game marketing music ever created, and getting both the trailer cut and full version here is a treat.

It encapsulates everything Dishonored is about -- familiar things twisted into something sinister. "Wrenhaven River" and the exploration tracks for the streets and aristocracy districts do the heavy lifting of world-building, shifting between uneasy calm and creeping suspicion.

"Honor for All" by Jon Licht and Copilot closes things out as the end credits theme with a warmth that feels earned after hours of skulking through plague-ravaged alleys. A lean, focused soundtrack that doesn't waste a single second.
