Disney Illusion Island (Original Video Game Soundtrack)

2023 · Switch

Disney Illusion Island surprised a lot of people in 2023 by being a genuinely excellent Metroidvania starring Mickey and friends, and the soundtrack matches that unexpected quality beat for beat. "Illusion Island" sets up a lush, orchestral world that feels distinctly Disney but with a modern platformer edge.

"Forgotten Farmlands" has this warm, pastoral bounce perfect for early exploration, while "Deep Roots" descends into something darker and more rhythmically complex as you push underground. "Downtown Gizmopolis" flips the script entirely with funky, mechanical grooves that sound like a clockwork city running at full speed.

The character and NPC themes are full of personality. "Mazzy's Theme" is upbeat and endearing, "The PostOfficer" has a quirky energy that fits whatever oddball character it scores, and "Peahen" carries a regal warmth. The environmental design is strong too -- "Shallows" has a liquid, swaying quality, "The Sky Below" plays with airy textures and a sense of vertigo, and "Service Tunnels" gives you that tense, mechanical hum of crawling through the infrastructure of an unfamiliar world.

The boss encounters bring real weight. "Grayzar's Workshop" builds tension before "Grayzar" itself drops into full combat mode, and "Head of the Highness" is imposing without losing the adventure tone. "Monoth's True Heroes" closes the main journey with genuine emotional payoff.

The bonus tracks are a nice reward too -- "Servo's Swing Spot" is a jazz-inflected jam that feels like a hidden room you stumbled into. For a game that could have coasted on brand recognition alone, this soundtrack proves the developers were building something they actually cared about.
