Dodonpachi II -- also known as DoDonPachi Bee Storm -- is the controversial sequel developed by IGS rather than CAVE, and its soundtrack reflects that outsider perspective on the franchise. The stage-boss pairing format in the tracklist tells the story: "Awakening" flows into "NIGHTMARE" and the BOSS BEE encounter, "Move Out" gives way to "DEEP FEAR" and the PATROL BEE, each stage building toward its own mini-climax.

The boss names -- BOSS BEE, PATROL BEE, HEX COMB, CRAZY BEE, ARMED BEE, MATRIX BEE -- lean hard into the insect theming the series always hinted at. The later stages get genuinely interesting. "Imprisonment" into "PANIC" for the ARMED BEE fight on Stage 5 ratchets the tension effectively, while "End" into "DEEP BLUE" against MATRIX BEE on Stage 6 provides what seems like a climax before the rug pull.
"Conspiracy" scores the fake ending, and then "Truth" and "UNKNOWN" carry you into the real Stage 7 and the SECRET BEE confrontation -- a structure that keeps the player guessing even through the music. While Dodonpachi II never earned the reverence of CAVE's in-house entries, its soundtrack has its own charm.
The compositions are competent and atmospheric, with a slightly different tonal palette than what Manabu Namiki and the CAVE sound team would have delivered. It is a fascinating alternate-timeline take on what DoDonPachi could sound like, and for collectors of shmup music, it fills an important gap in the franchise's discography.
