This is the physical CD release of the Donkey Kong 64 soundtrack, the same Grant Kirkhope compositions packaged as a standalone disc. If you were lucky enough to snag one of these back in 1999, you owned a genuine piece of Rare's golden era on a silver platter.

The tracklist mirrors the official digital release note for note, from the legendary "DK Rap" through to "Krool's Theme." The CD format gives these tracks a particular warmth that the compressed N64 audio couldn't fully deliver.
"Factory Melody" with its mechanical clanking and industrial groove, "Forest Melody" with its lush layered woodwinds, "Castle Melody" with its gothic organ work, they all benefit from being heard outside the game's sound engine.
"Manic Mine Cart" especially gains punch when it's not competing with gameplay sound effects. As a collector's item, this disc sits in that sweet spot between nostalgia piece and genuinely good listen. Kirkhope's ability to give every world its own musical identity, from the sun-drenched "Jungle Melody" to the eerie depths of "Cave Melody" to the swashbuckling "Shipwreck Melody," is on full display across these eighteen tracks.
The physical artifact of a time when Rare could do no wrong.
