Dragon Age II Original Videogame Soundtrack

2011 · MacOS, Playstation 3, Windows, Xbox 360

Inon Zur delivered one of BioWare's most emotionally grounded scores with Dragon Age II, and even in this compact 12-track release, the quality is undeniable. The main theme trades Origins' sweeping epic grandeur for something more personal and urgent, reflecting Hawke's story as a refugee-turned-champion rather than a world-saving hero.

"Hawke Family Theme" is arguably the album's emotional anchor -- a melody that carries loss, resilience, and familial love in equal measure, and it'll stick with you long after you stop listening. The faction themes tell the story of Kirkwall's political powder keg with remarkable economy.

"Qunari On The Rise" builds with militaristic percussion and exotic instrumentation that makes the Qunari feel genuinely alien and threatening, while "Templars" and "Mages" represent opposite sides of the game's central conflict with appropriately contrasting tones -- rigid authority versus desperate, almost frantic energy.

"Arishok" is a standout, capturing the imposing presence of one of BioWare's most memorable antagonists with deep brass and relentless rhythmic intensity. "Fenris Theme" brings a brooding, tortured quality that perfectly suits the ex-slave warrior, and "Kirkwall Nights" paints the city in moody, atmospheric strokes.

"Tavern Music" offers welcome levity with a folksy warmth, while "Rogue Heart" closes the album with a sense of adventure and defiance. For a game that caught flak in many areas, the soundtrack was never one of them -- this is Zur at his most emotionally precise.
