Dragon Age: Inquisition -The Bard Songs-

2015 · Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Windows, Xbox 360

The tavern bard songs from Inquisition became a phenomenon of their own, and this standalone release is the reason. These are full vocal performances recorded by Elizaveta and Raney Shockne that play in the Herald's Rest tavern, and they function as in-world folk music that tells the lore of Thedas through song.

"I Am the One" returns from Origins reimagined as an acoustic ballad that hits completely differently in this intimate context. "Empress of Fire" chronicles Celene's rise with the storytelling clarity of actual medieval balladry, and "Enchanters" became probably the most widely shared track from the entire game.

"Nightengales Eyes" is Leliana's song filtered through tavern gossip and rumor, turning the spymaster into a folk legend. "Sera" captures the Red Jenny's chaotic energy in a playful tune that sounds like it was written by someone who's both terrified of and charmed by her.

"Grey Warden" carries the weight of the order's sacrifice without any of the orchestral bombast of the main score -- just voice and instrument and centuries of accumulated sorrow. What makes this collection special is that every song works as standalone music outside the game.

"Once We Were" and "Rise" have the kind of timeless folk quality that could show up on a real-world acoustic album and nobody would question it. "Samson" adds moral complexity to a villain through lyrics alone. BioWare commissioned actual songs for a tavern most players sprint through, and the result is one of the most quietly remarkable soundtrack releases in RPG history.
