Dragon Age: Inquisition - The Descent / Trespasser

2015 · Playstation 4, Windows, Xbox One

Two DLC soundtracks on one release, and they could not be more different in tone. The Descent half takes you underground in the most literal sense, with "Descent - Titan" delivering this massive, reverberating presence that makes the Deep Roads feel ancient and alive in a way Origins never quite achieved.

"Edge of the Abyss" lives up to its name with layers of tension that just keep descending, and "Legion of the Dead" has that heavy, march-like quality that suits the dwarven warrior cult perfectly. Then Trespasser flips everything.

"Dark Solas Theme" is the track that recontextualizes the entire trilogy. If you know, you know, and the way it twists the Solas motif into something ominous and sorrowful is masterful composition. "Lost Elf Theme" has this ethereal, mournful quality that makes the ancient elven ruins feel genuinely sacred rather than just another dungeon.

The emotional range between these two pieces alone justifies the whole release. The Qunari tracks round things out with a completely different energy. "Qunari Atmosphere" builds dread through restraint, while "Qunari Battle (Full Theme)" unleashes everything the atmosphere track was holding back.

Together, these ten tracks cover more emotional and narrative ground than most full-length game scores manage. Essential listening for anyone invested in where Dragon Age is heading.
