Duke Nukem 3D

2013 · MacOS, MS-DOS, Windows

"Grabbag" alone is one of the most recognizable riffs in all of gaming, and the rest of this soundtrack is Lee Jackson and Bobby Prince delivering an entire album of MIDI-driven attitude. Duke Nukem 3D defined the mid-90s FPS sound with grimy, bluesy rock filtered through a Sound Blaster, and every track here drips with that same too-cool-for-school energy.

"Stalker" sets the tone for Hollywood Holocaust, "The City Streets" makes you feel the neon grit of a ruined LA, and "Taking the Death Toll" keeps the pressure cranked. The variety is deeper than people remember. "Water World" goes atmospheric and eerie for the underwater sections, "Sneaky Snake" creeps along with tension, and "Robocreeping" has this mechanical menace that fits the later tech-heavy levels perfectly.

"Going After the Fat Commander" is pure adrenaline. "Gloomy" and "In Hiding" pull back into darker, moodier territory that proves the soundtrack isn't all swagger. "Subway," "Gotham," "Lord of L.A." -- the track names read like a tour of Duke's world.

"233.778 Celsius" (Fahrenheit 451, nice touch) brings the heat for the fire station level. The 2013 rerelease preserves every gritty MIDI note. This is the sound of PC gaming's most unapologetically brash era, and it still absolutely rips.
