This is the arcade version in its purest form, before the SNES port softened some of the edges. "Sand Storm" opens the journey with driving percussion and that unmistakable Gradius sense of forward momentum. "Aqua Illusion" flows with liquid grace, "In the Wind" soars with one of the series' most beautiful melodies, and then "High Speed Dimension" rips you into pure adrenaline.
"Easter Stone" brings the Moai heads back with an appropriately ancient-sounding theme, while "Fire Scramble" and "Cosmo Plant" push into increasingly intense territory as the stages pile on. "Dark Force" is one of the all-time great boss themes in the franchise, carrying real menace in its urgent synth lines.
The escape sequence track "Escape to the Freedom" captures that desperate rush perfectly, and "King of Kings" (the final boss theme) closes the loop with appropriate grandeur. From legend to myth indeed.
