Manhunt. The Original Video Game Soundtrack

2003 · Playstation 2, Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Windows

Rockstar's most controversial title got an equally unsettling soundtrack that refuses to let you feel safe for even a second. The score leans heavily into industrial dread and ambient horror, with tracks like "Doorway into Hell" and "Mouth of Madness" building walls of distorted noise and low-frequency tension that mirror the snuff-film nightmare James Earl Cash is trapped in.

"Menu Ambience" alone sets the tone before you even start playing -- a droning, suffocating hum that tells you exactly what kind of game this is. The level-specific tracks are masterfully paced to match the escalating brutality of the gameplay.

"White Trash" and "Fuelled by Hate" bring a grimy, punk-adjacent edge to the Skinz and Wardogs encounters, while "Graveyard Shift" and "Kill the Rabbit" lean into pure psychological horror territory. "Trained to Kill" shifts gears when the Cerberus units show up, trading chaotic noise for something more clinical and militaristic -- a subtle but effective signal that the rules have changed.

What makes this soundtrack genuinely impressive is how it functions as a piece of sound design as much as music. Craig Conner and the audio team at Rockstar North understood that Manhunt needed a score that worked in the shadows, building dread through texture rather than melody.

"Time 2 Die" and "Deliverance" bring the experience to a fittingly grim close, while the "Main Theme" and "Credits Line" bookend the whole ordeal with a sense of nihilistic finality that stays with you long after you put the controller down.
