Manifold Garden Original Soundtrack

2021 · Playstation 4, Switch

Manifold Garden is an Escher-inspired puzzle game about impossible architecture and infinite recursion, and Laryssa Okada's soundtrack is a perfect sonic mirror of its mind-bending visuals. The music operates in a liminal space between ambient and minimalist composition, with tracks like "Trust Fall" and "First Gate" easing you into the game's reality-defying logic with gentle, evolving textures.

"House Of Leaves" -- a title that nods to Mark Z. Danielewski's novel about impossible spaces -- is a particularly apt piece, building unease through subtlety rather than force. The track names themselves read like a poetry collection, and the music lives up to that literary quality.

"Petrichor" evokes the scent of rain on stone with crystalline tones that seem to shimmer and evaporate. "Mise En Abyme" -- the artistic term for an image containing a smaller copy of itself -- uses recursive musical phrases that mirror the game's visual recursion.

"Indra's Net," named after the Buddhist concept of infinite interconnection, weaves delicate threads of sound into something vast and contemplative. Even "Tetrominos" finds musicality in geometric shapes. "Colossus" and "Once Metropolis" introduce a sense of scale that makes you feel tiny within the game's impossible structures, while "The Arboretum" and "Bloom" bring organic warmth to a world of stark geometry.

"Raymarching" -- named after the rendering technique used to create the game's visuals -- is a fitting nod to the technical artistry behind the scenes. The 29-track album is a substantial listen that works beautifully as standalone ambient music, but gains extra dimension when you understand the spatial puzzles and architectural impossibilities it was designed to accompany.
