Marl Jong!! Vocal CD

2003 · Playstation

Leave it to Nippon Ichi to release a mahjong game starring characters from the Marl Kingdom series and pack it with a full vocal album. Marl Jong!! took the cast from Rhapsody and its sequels and dropped them into a tile-matching setting, but the vocal CD that accompanied it treats the music with the same theatrical sincerity as the mainline RPGs.

Tenpei Sato's compositions give each of the eight tracks a distinct personality, carried by the Japanese voice cast who brought these characters to life. With only eight tracks and no individual titles listed, this is a compact but focused collection.

The vocal performances range from upbeat and playful to genuinely tender, reflecting the emotional range the Marl Kingdom series was always known for. Each track feels like a character song, the kind of thing you'd hear in a stage musical number, which is entirely on-brand for a franchise that literally built its combat system around singing.

This is a deep-cut collector's item, the sort of release that only the most dedicated Marl Kingdom fans will track down. But for those who fell in love with the series' unique blend of strategy, puppets, and show tunes, it is a small treasure.

It is a reminder that Nippon Ichi poured real craft into even their most niche spinoff products, never phoning in the music regardless of the game attached to it.
