METAL BLACK

1992 · Arcade, Saturn

Zuntata went completely unhinged on this one. "Born to be free" opens Round 1 with this desperate, almost prog-rock energy that has no business coming out of a Taito arcade board, all pounding drums and wailing synth leads.

Then "Dual Moon" drops for Round 2 and shifts into something more atmospheric and eerie, like drifting through wreckage. The real gut punch is "Time" on Round 6, a track so hauntingly sparse it barely feels like a shoot-em-up anymore.

The whole soundtrack plays like Zuntata processing the end of the world through FM synthesis. If you think 90s arcade music was all upbeat power-ups and fanfares, Metal Black will correct that fast.
