Mutant Mudds OST

2012 · Nintendo 3DS, Windows

Chunky, lo-fi chiptune that sounds like a lost Game Boy cartridge got remastered with modern punch. Mutant Mudds is a 2012 retro platformer by Renegade Kid for 3DS and PC, and the soundtrack leans hard into that 12-bit aesthetic the game invented for itself.

"World 1-1" locks in immediately with a bouncy, catchy loop that sticks in your head for days. "Grannie's Attic" shifts into something moodier and slightly creepy, perfect for the secret levels tucked behind the main game.

The Ghost stages bring a darker palette, almost spooky chiptune that contrasts with the bright primary-color energy of the main worlds. "V-Land" and "G-Land" are the virtual and CGA-styled bonus worlds, and each one sounds like a different era of handheld hardware.

Short loops, tight compositions, nothing overstays its welcome. The death jingle is mercifully brief considering how often you hear it. If you grew up on Game Boy platformers and miss that feeling of a four-channel soundtrack carrying an entire world, Mutant Mudds nails it.
