Yoko Kanno scoring a 1995 NHK documentary about China and somehow it's one of her most overlooked works. The Main Theme is this sweeping orchestral piece that she then deconstructs across the whole album, with piano solo, percussion, and duet versions that each reveal different layers.
"MUGEN" blends what sounds like traditional Chinese instrumentation with jazz leanings halfway through, which is so aggressively Kanno it hurts. "MIZU SHIGOTO" has this gentle, pastoral quality that the duet version deepens beautifully.
Fifteen tracks in thirty-seven minutes and not a wasted second. If you've gone through her anime work and want to see what she does with a documentary canvas, start here.
