Rod Land

1990 · Arcade

Bouncy FM synth melodies that sound like a music box made of pure sugar. Tsukasa Tawada scored Jaleco's 1990 arcade platformer Rod Land with tracks that are absurdly catchy for a game about fairies rescuing their mom. "Let's Sing Cheerfully" is this relentlessly upbeat loop that burrows into your skull, while "Dance on Maple Leaf" has a waltzy swing that feels way too sophisticated for a single-screen platformer.

"Symphonic Poem" on the arrange disc goes full orchestral and it actually works. Tawada was basically Jaleco's entire music department at the time, doing everything solo. The kind of arcade score where even the boss themes feel like they're smiling at you.
