Sol-Feace MegaDrive Soundtracks

2007 · Genesis / Mega Drive

That Mega Drive YM2612 chip doing absolute work here. Sol-Feace was a Sega CD launch title shmup and the soundtrack pushes the hardware with these aggressive FM synth leads over punchy bass lines. "Cosmic Illusion" on Mission 1 sets the tone with driving arpeggios that feel like pure 16-bit adrenaline.

The Boss 1 theme shared across three missions is this tight loop of tension that never gets old even after repeated deaths. "An Artificial Sun" on Mission 3 goes almost prog with its structure. Having both CD audio and FM replica versions on here is a cool comparison.

Anyone nostalgic for that era when shmups and their soundtracks were competing to be the loudest thing in the room should check this out.
