The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth II

2006 · Windows

Mid-2000s RTS orchestral scoring that goes way harder than it needed to. Battle for Middle-Earth II on PC had Jamie Christopherson writing faction-specific themes and the dwarven tracks alone are worth the listen. Elven Nightfall pulls way back into ethereal vocal lines and shimmering strings, totally different atmosphere in the same war. Goblin Swarm is chaotic and frantic with these skittering woodwind runs that match the on-screen panic perfectly.

Dwarven Mining Town though. Cozy and industrial at the same time, somehow. The whole OST commits to making every race sound distinct and it pays off across every track. If you played RTS games in the 360 era, this is peak faction identity in music form.
