The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

2002 · Playstation 2, Windows, Xbox

Full orchestral Middle-earth energy that stands completely on its own from the Howard Shore film scores. Brad Spear and Jimmy Smyth composed this for the 2002 action-adventure game across PS2, Xbox, and PC. The Shire track nails that pastoral warmth with woodwinds and gentle strings, then Rivendell opens up into this sweeping elven grandeur that actually gave the films a run for their money.

The Barrow Downs gets genuinely eerie and tense in ways the game needed. Lothlorien is so ethereal it almost floats. This was a licensed Tolkien game, not a movie tie-in, so the composers had freedom to build their own sonic vision of the books.

If you love orchestral fantasy scoring, do not sleep on this one.
