Toshiaki Tomizawa's FM work on Vimana is some of the tightest arcade composition from 1991. This first volume in Toaplan's digital collection pairs Vimana with Grind Stormer, and both soundtracks absolutely rip. Opening ~ Space High launches with this spacey, driving melody that immediately tells you this is a Toaplan shooter.

Hyper Voltage Wars layers these aggressive synth lines over a punchy rhythm section that just escalates. On the Grind Stormer side, WONDERFUL DREAMER has such a different energy, almost optimistic for a shmup. NIGHT BIRD as the boss theme goes appropriately sinister.
Tomizawa later went on to score Dodonpachi and other Cave classics, so you can hear where that lineage started. Essential for anyone tracing the DNA of 90s arcade shooters.
