Zero Wing

1989 · Arcade, Linux, MacOS, Playstation 4

Yeah the meme game has actual bangers and nobody talks about it. Zero Wing's 1989 arcade soundtrack by Tatsuya Uemura and Toshiaki Tomizawa goes way beyond "all your base." "Open Your Eyes" kicks off Stage 1 with this FM synth melody that's immediately catchy and keeps building momentum through the whole level.

"Babylonian Nights" drops into something moodier and more rhythmically complex, those arpeggiated basslines doing serious work. "Hit Man" for Stage 8 brings the intensity you want for a final push. Even the continue theme "Dullard" has character.

The Yamaha FM chip sound is crisp and punchy throughout. If you only know this game from the meme, do yourself a favor and actually listen to the OST that carried the whole shoot-em-up.
