The PS3 years were the golden age of the gruff man holding a gun. Here are ten boxes that took that idea and somehow made it worse.
10. Rogue Warrior (2009)

A bearded man in black gear grips a knife against a black background, with the logo in grey. The hero is voiced by Mickey Rourke, which is the most interesting thing about it, and the box tells you none of that. The game has since been cited as one of the worst ever made.
9. Damnation (2009)

A man in a cowboy hat holds a huge gun in front of a grey city, under a chunky metal logo. Every part of it is a shade of grey or brown, so it looks like a dozen other covers from the same shelf.
8. Haze (2008)

Half of a soldier's face peers out from behind a big yellow helmet, while a pistol points up beside him. It is bold, at least. Even so, this was Free Radical Design's final game before the studio was acquired, and it deserved a cover that showed more than a helmet.
7. MindJack (2011)

A glaring face floats over a blue blizzard of soldiers, gunfire and lens flare, with the logo almost lost in the noise. It is so busy that your eye has nowhere to land.
6. Fast & Furious: Showdown (2013)

A grey muscle car skids under a grey logo in front of a grey city. For a series about colourful cars, the box drains every bit of colour out of it.
5. Rambo: The Video Game (2014)

A collage of film stills and a helicopter is stacked over an explosion and the red logo, like the back of a DVD box. Reviewers praised the cover system, but they found the graphics poor, and the box does not help.
4. Ride to Hell: Retribution (2013)

A grinning skull in a biker helmet sits on crossed pistols, over a pair of bikers riding out of the flames. It looks like a patch sewn onto a leather jacket. The game behind it was considered by many critics one of the worst video games of all time.
3. Vampire Rain: Altered Species (2008)

A soldier in goggles stands in the rain with his squad behind him, under the subtitle Altered Species. You would never guess this is a vampire game. That was the plan: the PS3 port tries very hard to hide the vampires with new box art and a new subtitle.
2. BioShock Infinite (2013)

A man with a shotgun on his shoulder stands in front of a burning American flag, with the logo above him. Fans and players were critical of the art, because it left out Elizabeth and anything unique from the game. In the end, the studio ran a poll to pick the art for a reversible cover.
1. Yakuza 3 (2009)

The American box is a tight, awkward crop of Kiryu's face on the left edge, with a red dragon pattern filling the rest. When the West finally got the game, it came with some of the worst, laziest box art of the generation. Japan's box, by contrast, is a striking black and white painting of Kiryu with a cigarette, under a bold red logo.
The covers that got it right: the best PS3 box art.
