"Vertex" launches Stage 1 with immediate momentum, but the real genius is hearing how "Xanadu," "Flotage," and "Presentiment" shift between their A-side and B-side versions depending on your route. "Endorphin" as a boss theme name is almost too perfect for the chemical rush of surviving a CAVE boss fight.
"Desperado" cranks everything for the final boss, and then "Mercilessness" for the true last boss just throws away any remaining restraint. "Zatsuza" hiding as a secret track and "Resurrection" closing things on the ending screen give the album a sense of completeness beyond the carnage.
Seventeen tracks of arcade-grade shmup perfection.
