Maneater Original Video Game Soundtrack

2020 · Playstation 4, Playstation 5, Switch, Windows

Maneater's soundtrack has the unenviable job of scoring the most ridiculous premise in gaming -- you're literally a revenge-seeking bull shark with RPG progression -- and it absolutely nails it. "Shark in the River" and "Prologue Theme" set up the bayou atmosphere with swampy, Southern Gothic undertones, while "Meet Pete" introduces the game's reality-TV villain with the kind of swaggering theme he deserves.

The music walks a tightrope between genuinely thrilling action scoring and winking self-awareness. "The Depths" and "Deep Shadows" are where the soundtrack gets legitimately atmospheric, capturing the murky terror of open water from the predator's perspective.

"A Taste of Flesh" and "Iron Jaw" ramp up the aggression for the game's escalating feeding frenzies, and "They Bite Back" provides the tension of being hunted by increasingly desperate humans. The narrative arc built through tracks like "Father Son" and "You Reap" / "What You Sow" gives surprising emotional weight to what could have been pure camp.

The back half of the album charts the shark's evolution from scrappy pup to unstoppable apex nightmare. "Terrorizer" and "Fever Dream" hit hard during the late-game power fantasy moments, "Hunter Hunted" flips the dynamic perfectly, and "Apex Predators" delivers the climactic energy the final showdown demands.

"Finale" wraps things up with a sense of scale that sells the absurd journey. It's a 26-track score that takes its B-movie premise just seriously enough to make the whole experience work.
