Mata Nui Online Game II - Original Soundtrack

2003 · Linux, MacOS, Online, Windows

The Mata Nui Online Game II soundtrack is a piece of pure early-2000s Bionicle nostalgia. This browser-based RPG sequel let you play as Hahli, a Ga-Matoran, competing in the Kolhii championship across the island of Mata Nui, and the music captures each region's distinct character beautifully.

"Hahli's Awakening" opens with a sense of quiet purpose, setting up the humble beginning of a Matoran who's about to journey across the entire island. "Ga-Wahi" establishes the watery, serene homeland before you venture out into wildly different environments.

Each Wahi (region) theme is a masterclass in environmental storytelling through music. "Ko-Wahi" brings the isolated, crystalline cold of the ice region where Kopaka's people dwell in silence. "Onu-Wahi" channels the deep underground caverns of the earth village, "Le-Wahi" captures the treetop jungle canopy energy, "Po-Wahi" evokes the vast desert expanses, and "Ta-Wahi" radiates volcanic heat.

"The Old Fusa Path" and "The East Gardens" flesh out the world between the major villages, making the island feel like a real, connected place rather than just a series of disconnected levels. The training themes add gameplay-specific texture, with "Training in Speed" and "Training in Strategy" accompanying the skill-building minigames that prepared Hahli for Kolhii matches.

"Nokama's Hut" gives the wise Turaga elder her own intimate musical space. For a free Flash game tied to a toy line, MNOG II punched way above its weight in worldbuilding, and this 13-track score was a big part of why the Bionicle community still holds these games in such high regard decades later.
