For a browser-based Flash game promoting a LEGO toy line, the Mata Nui Online Game had absolutely no business being this good -- and that extends to its soundtrack. Released in 2001 as a point-and-click adventure set on the island of Mata Nui, the game's music established the atmospheric foundation for the entire Bionicle universe.

"Beach Chant" immediately sets a tone that is equal parts tropical and mysterious, while "The Legend of Mata Nui" delivers worldbuilding through sound alone, evoking an ancient mythology that felt genuinely deep for a toy tie-in.
Each village region of Mata Nui gets its own distinct sonic identity. "Mines of Onu-Koro" captures the claustrophobic weight of the underground earth village, "A Walk in the Jungle" brings the organic warmth of Le-Wahi to life, and "Hunters in the Drifts" conveys the harsh isolation of Ko-Wahi's frozen peaks.
"Le-Koro Band" is a delightful detour into the tree-dwelling Matoran's musical culture, while "Plague in Po-Koro" shifts into genuine tension as the infected Kohlii balls threaten the desert village. The cheeky inclusion of Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" for the Nui-Rama aerial battle is a fun surprise.
The endgame tracks are where the score reaches its peak. "Defense of the Kini-Nui," "The Battle Below," and "The Makuta" escalate the stakes dramatically, and the unused "Takua" track is a wonderful bonus for completionists.
This soundtrack holds a special place in the hearts of an entire generation who grew up clicking through Takua's adventure in their web browsers, and revisiting it today reveals music that genuinely holds up beyond nostalgia.
It helped prove that a tie-in game could have real artistic ambition.
