Soukyugurentai Original Soundtrack

2011 · Arcade, Playstation, Saturn

Distorted synth brass ripping over drum n' bass breakbeats in a 1996 arcade shooter. Soukyugurentai (aka Terra Diver) has Hitoshi Sakimoto and Manabu Namiki doing what they do best: making military sci-fi sound impossibly stylish.

"Above Ota City" layers these propulsive electronic rhythms under orchestral stabs that feel way too sophisticated for a shmup. "Descent Into the Clouds" shifts into this moody, atmospheric thing with pulsing basslines. Then "Bullet Storm" just goes full sensory overload with relentless percussive energy.

The whole score sits in this weird sweet spot between Sakimoto's later orchestral RPG work and raw Raizing arcade intensity. Essential listening if you've ever dodged bullet patterns at 2AM.
